Playlist - January 2007
Another month, another hour of disjointed listening. (In case you're wondering: Yes, I will (probably) resume normal posting someday.)
The Mountain Goats - Up The Wolves >> from The Sunset Tree One of many fine songs from 'The Sunset Tree'. It alludes to the story of feral children Romulus and Remus, but beyond that, I've read several different interpretations.
The Minders - Jenny >> from It's a Bright Guilty World
Maritime - Parade of Punk Rock T-Shirts >> from We, the Vehicles Fans of The Promise Ring's later material will probably like this.
Richard Hawley - I Sleep Alone >> from Coles Corner
Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton - Doctor Blind >> from Knives Don't Have Your Back Much like some of Radiohead's more recent work, this elegiac song manages to make gloom beautiful.
Leonard Cohen - Who By Fire >> from New Skin for the Old Ceremony
Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) >> from Funeral The Arcade Fire's new album will be released in a little more than a month. It's unfair to expect it to live up to Funeral, an album that is easily one of the top five of this decade so far. 'Funeral' will stand on its own regardless of what comes next, so I think it's a good idea to revisit it (if only for one track) before all the reviewing, discussing, and other clatter about the new album starts.
Midlake - Excited But Not Enough >> from Milkmaid Grand Army EP A very early tune from Midlake. Their sound has evolved since this tune came out, but here they wear their influences prominently on their sleeve, which isn't a bad thing because it's a cool song that works well. Radiohead meets Grandaddy, and Tim Smith's vocals are a dead ringer for Thom Yorke.
The Beatles - Octopus's Garden >> from Abbey Road A fine example of how the Beatles could turn an exceedingly simple tune (sorry, Ringo) into a classic. The guitar flourishes and overall production are superb. (Octopuses really are known to collect 'gardens' in front of their dens, usually made of bones and shells from meals, but sometimes containing other items like rocks, shiny objects and apparently even cameras. It seems that was the inspiration for the song.)
Pernice Brothers - Automaton >> from Live a Little Simple, straightforward pop. This song actually isn't that remarkable except for the hook first heard at 1:27. And the part following it that reminds me, for some reason, of that fine tune "Oops I Did It Again"... the 1932 original, I think. Or the fugue version...
Fountains of Wayne - A Fine Day for a Parade >> from Utopia Parkway This month's old tune brought back to me by iTunes in a shuffle. It has an Eleanor Rigby vibe of suburban isolation to it.
Amy Winehouse - You Know I'm No Good >> from Back to Black Amy is a well-known British singer with an incredible voice who combines sounds of R&B and Jazz from the '50s and '60s with fairly modern (even coarse) lyrics. It's a formula that doesn't always work, but that voice... I think she's about to take the U.S. by storm. (Ghostface Killah is featured in another version.)
Neko Case - Runnin' Out Of Fools >> from Blacklisted
U2 - Stay (Faraway, So Close) >> from Zooropa One of many fine songs from one of U2's most underrated albums (aside from Pop, maybe). The recent live version from Toronto is also pretty good. (Also check out the Wim Wenders film Faraway, So Close!)
Doves - Here It Comes >> from Lost Souls Lost Souls is another old friend that found its way back to me this month. Because it should really be listened to as an album, choosing just one song for this playlist was very difficult.
| Leonard Cohen feat. U2 - Tower of Song >> from Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man (Soundtrack) A fine version of a fine Leonard Cohen song. The I'm Your Man tribute film was hit-and-miss. But I think this version of 'Tower of Song' might be better than the original (minus Bono's unnecessary contribution on lead vocal). No one "sings" Leonard Cohen like Leonard Cohen, and Edge's guitar is perfect for the song. (Martha Wainwright also delivers an interesting version in the same film.)
