Playlist - April 2007

Another month, another hour of disjointed listening...

The Rosewood Thieves - Los Angeles >>
from From The Decker House

A summery 60s/Beatles-esque song.

The Beatles - You Never Give Me Your Money >>
from Abbey Road

Speaking of the Beatles, here's an old favorite. Every time I listen to Abbey Road, I'm struck by the impeccable production. Every sound and detail clearly received a remarkable amount of attention.

John Lennon - Gimme Some Truth >>
from Imagine

This tune has remained relevant for 35 years and counting... (good/bad?). George Harrison's guitar makes the song.

Radiohead - I Am A Wicked Child >>
from Go To Sleep [UK CD Single 2] / Com Lag

Some of you probably know I obsessively collect Radiohead b-sides because that's quite simply where some of their best work is tucked away. This 2003 tune is a prime example. It's a great song and rather unlike anything in their catalog. And now you don't have to track down the right 'Go To Sleep' single to snag a copy. The Com Lag EP was finally released in the U.S. yesterday. It includes this song and several others (but this one's the best of the bunch).

Margot & The Nuclear So & So's - Barfight Revolution, Power Violence >>
from The Dust of Retreat
Margot & The Nuclear So & So's - Vampires in Blue Dresses >>
from The Dust of Retreat
Gruff Rhys - Candylion >>
from Candylion
Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3 - Olé! Tarantula >>
from Olé! Tarantula

We all love Robyn Hitchcock (or should), and this song is a pretty good example of why. (The Venus 3, by the way, are Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey, and Bill Rieflin - names many of you will recognize.) If you like this, you might enjoy Nextdoorland, recorded in 2002 when Mr. Hitchcock got back together with The Soft Boys for a while (start with "Mr. Kennedy").

Yo La Tengo - Mr. Tough >>
from I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass

This sounds nothing like Yo La Tengo. I found it annoying at first, but after a few spins I realized what a superb song it is. Only YLT could manage to pull off something like this.

Forro In The Dark - Cajuina >>
from Bonfires of São João
Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars - Monkey Work >>
from Living Like A Refugee

From the liner notes:
"‘When monkey work, babu capu to eat.’ Reuben explains ‘the monkey in this song symbolizes the underprivileged, while the baboon are the power men.’ It is a scathing commentary against the insatiable greed and deplorable immorality that contributed to causing civil war in Sierra Leone."

Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars - I'm Not A Fool >>
from Living Like A Refugee
Delroy Wilson - This Life Makes Me Wonder >>
from Jonny Greenwood is the Controller

Good review of the compilation from Pitchfork.

Amadou et Mariam - Baara >>
from Sou Ni Tilé
Amadou et Mariam - Je Pense À Toi >>
from Sou Ni Tilé
The Holmes Brothers - Close The Door >>
from State of Grace
Junior Kimbrough - Tramp >>
from God Knows I Tried
